Neutron Research

Understanding the cosmos and its smallest particles is a dream of mankind. Knowledge of the interrelationships can create opportunities for economic utilization. At the Technical University (TU) of Munich, scientists in the PENeLOPE project are determining the lifetime of free neutrons that influence element formation. PENeLOPE stands for Precision Experiment on the Neutron Lifetime Operating with Proton Extraction. The scientists want to achieve an unprecedented precision of the measurements. UHV, strong magnetic forces and cryogenic temperatures will be used. Among other things, a 500-liter storage bottle was designed for PENeLOPE.

It has a leakage rate < 10-8 mbar l / s and is 3 meters (118.11in) high with a diameter of 2.5 meters (98.43in). VACOM has supplied a toroidal pressure vessel for this storage cylinder, which also forms the outer shell. This vacuum chamber reflects very well VACOM's manufacturing capabilities, especially in the field of electrical feedthroughs. 44 electrical sub-D feedthroughs with 50 contacts each were installed on the upper, ring-shaped surface. This is the Sub-D pro variant. It is particularly suitable for the experiments because of its magnetic properties. VACOM's know-how and the quality of the vacuum components supplied have thus contributed significantly to the success of the project.
