Radiation Experiments

Experimental physics uses vacuum applications in many ways. CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research near Geneva, is the world's largest research centre in the field of particle physics. Its centrepiece is the 27-kilometre-long accelerator, the Large Electron-Positron Collider. In the research field of particle physics, pressures in high and ultra-high vacuum are required. At the same time, special demands are made on the magnetic and radiation-resistant properties of the material of the vacuum chamber and components.

VACOM has developed and supplied a cylindrical chamber for the project of an optically read proton beam monitor. The system is based on GEM (Gaseous Electron Multiplier) technology, which is used in nuclear physics or radiation detection. The cylinder chamber made of AluVaC® is used for ultra-high vacuum. In it, data of the ionised radiation are recorded and transferred to measuring instruments outside the chamber. Due to its material properties, the aluminium chamber is not only lightweight, but above all non-magnetic. In addition, aluminium has extremely low outgassing rates. These properties predestine such cylindrical chambers for experiments with radiation.
