Miniature Chamber
VACOM can point to a whole series of successfully implemented projects. They document the company's know-how and performance, creativity and experience in vacuum technology. Time measurement and the synchronization of processes based on it play an increasingly important role in industry and research. The atomic clock, which works with microwaves based on hydrogen atoms, has been, up until now, the ulitmate. Optical ion clocks are the latest development in this field. They surpass today's standards of time measurement in stability and accuracy by a factor of more than ten. A joint project of partners from industry and research has developed the first transportable optical clock. VACOM was co-developer of the opticlock. The system was transformed from a highly complex laboratory setup into a user-friendly and transportable complete system for continuous operation outside a specialized environment. The focus was on miniaturization and maximum precision.
An essential component of the opticlock is the compact vacuum chamber developed and manufactured by VACOM. VACOM developed the chamber and supplied the special vacuum technology for a stable ultra high vacuum in which the ions required for timing are generated and held. The chamber has a square CF cutting edge and a holding an ultra-stable optical resonator. This isolates the resonator from vibration and temperature fluctuations. The decisive factors for the vacuum components were the appropriate materials, a precisely application-specific design and compliance with the tightest manufacturing tolerances. One challenge was the miniaturization of the chamber to meet the mobility requirements of the overall design.
